Peripheral Devices
Peripheral devices are external hardware components that are connected to a computer to expand its functionality. They are not part of the core computer system (CPU, motherboard, and memory), but they help the user interact with the computer and perform tasks.
Types of Peripheral Devices
1. Input Devices
These are used to enter data and instructions into the computer.
- Keyboard – For typing text and commands.
- Mouse – For pointing, clicking, and selecting items on the screen.
- Scanner – Converts physical documents into digital form.
- Microphone – Captures sound input.
- Webcam – Captures video input.
2. Output Devices
These display or present information from the computer to the user.
- Monitor – Displays text, images, and videos.
- Printer – Produces a hard copy of digital documents.
- Speakers – Play audio output.
- Projector – Displays the screen output on a large surface.
3. Storage Devices
Used to store data permanently or temporarily.
- External Hard Drive – For backing up and transferring large files.
- USB Flash Drive – Portable storage device.
- Memory Card – Used in cameras, phones, and other gadgets.
- CD/DVD Drive – Reads and writes data on discs (less common today).
4. Communication Devices
Enable data exchange between computers and networks.
- Modem – Connects to the internet via telephone or cable lines.
- Network Interface Card (NIC) – Connects the computer to a network.
- Wi-Fi Adapter – Enables wireless connectivity.
